At 9:28 on a November morning, a maintenance crew was preparing to cut grass along the divider of National Highway 53 near Pithora, Chhattisgarh. Forty workers. A routine shift.
Then a sedan crossed into the closed lane at 110 km/h. The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.
Between the vehicle and the crew stood a TTMA-200, a trailer truck mounted attenuator built to absorb exactly this kind of impact. Its energy-absorbing cartridges crushed inward as designed, dissipating the collision forces in a controlled sequence.
The result: the driver stepped out of his vehicle uninjured. All 40 workers finished their shift. The entire event was captured on dashcam.
This is what a trailer truck mounted attenuator is for. Not to prevent the errant vehicle, because no work zone setup can do that, but to make sure that when it comes, the impact is absorbed by engineered hardware instead of people. The crushed attenuator sections in the photos are not a failure. They are the system working exactly as designed.
The context makes it matter more. National highways make up around 2% of India's road network but account for roughly 30% of road fatalities, with over 29,000 deaths recorded on national highways in the first half of 2025 alone, according to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways data. Work zones are among the most exposed environments on those roads.
The TTMA-200 involved is MASH 2016 tested to Test Level 3 (TL-3).
